The Rega Planar 2 turntable represents a significant leap forward in turntable design, a culmination of two years of intensive development. It's built for the listener who is ready to step up and uncover deeper layers of detail and emotion in their vinyl collection. Featuring the stunning, hand-assembled RB220 tonearm and a beautiful 10mm 'Optiwhite' glass platter, every element of the Planar 2 is engineered for sonic purity. This isn't just about playing records; it's about providing a clear window into the performance, allowing the music's natural energy and character to shine through with breathtaking clarity and irresistible rhythm.
Key Features
- RB220 Precision Tonearm: A hand-assembled tonearm with Rega's patented ultra low friction polymer bearings, built with no measurable free play.
- 10mm 'Optiwhite' Glass Platter: A heavy, float glass platter with enhanced flywheel effect for superior speed stability and accuracy.
- Rega Nd3 Cartridge: Every Planar 2 we sell comes with the Rega Nd3 moving magnet cartridge factory fitted and aligned, ready for play.
- 24V Low-Noise Motor: A new, low-vibration motor assembly ensures a quiet background, letting more of the music come through.
- High-Gloss Acrylic Plinth: A rigid plinth in high gloss black or high gloss white (Rega also makes a walnut effect finish), with an ergonomically positioned power switch.
- Re-designed Feet: An improved foot assembly increases stability and dramatically reduces vibration transfer.
- Self-Securing Brass Bearing: A new 11mm central bearing design improves fit and reduces stress, preventing unwanted energy transfer.
- Lifetime Warranty: Built to last and backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
A Heritage of Precision
The Planar 2 carries the legacy of Rega's most iconic designs while pushing the boundaries of modern performance. Developed in tandem with the legendary Planar 3, it shares a commitment to engineering excellence. The centerpiece is the RB220 tonearm, a marvel of precision that extracts incredible detail from the record groove. Combined with the new low-noise motor and self-securing central bearing, the entire system works in quiet harmony, creating a stable platform for your vinyl to reveal its true sonic potential. It's a turntable that respects the music, and it shows.
Elegance in Motion
From the moment you see it, the Planar 2 commands attention. The 10mm 'Optiwhite' float glass platter doesn't just improve performance; it creates a stunning visual centerpiece. The high-gloss acrylic laminated plinth, available in multiple finishes, is both beautiful and functional, providing a rigid, low-resonance base for the key components. Every aspect, from the feel of the tonearm lift to the clean, minimalist lines, has been considered. It’s a turntable that looks as good as it sounds, adding a touch of timeless class to any room.
The Sound of Progress
The sonic performance of the Planar 2 is where it truly excels. It delivers an authoritative and engaging sound that is rhythmically precise and wonderfully agile. The timing is impeccable, creating an irresistible groove that pulls you into the heart of the music. Dynamics are handled with a maturity that is rare at this level, from the quietest passages to the most powerful crescendos. It’s a sound that is both detailed and coherent, faithfully communicating the emotion and energy of the original performance, making every listening session a captivating event.

Rega Planar 2 or Planar 3 for a first turntable?
Rega Planar 2 or Planar 3 for a first turntable?
Both are Rega designs developed together, and both change speed by moving the belt by hand. The Planar 3 steps up in three places: the RB330 tonearm in place of the Planar 2's RB220, a 12mm glass platter in place of 10mm, and Rega's double brace, a phenolic brace linking the tonearm mounting to the main bearing. The Planar 3 can also take Rega's Neo power supply later for push-button speed change; the Planar 2 is not on Rega's list of Neo-compatible models. If you expect to upgrade over time, the Planar 3 has more room to grow.
Does the Rega Planar 2 need a separate phono preamp?
Does the Rega Planar 2 need a separate phono preamp?
It needs a phono stage somewhere in the system. The Planar 2 has none built in, so it connects either to an amplifier with a moving magnet phono input or to an external phono stage. Its Nd3 cartridge is a moving magnet design with 5 to 6mV of output, so any good MM input will do. Rega's own options are the Fono Mini A2D MK2, which adds a USB output for recording, or the io integrated amplifier, which has an MM phono stage built in.
How do I play 45 rpm records on the Planar 2?
How do I play 45 rpm records on the Planar 2?
By hand. Lift off the glass platter and move the drive belt from the 33 1/3 step of the motor pulley to the 45 step, then refit the platter. For 7-inch singles with a large center hole you will also want a spindle adaptor such as the Rega 45 RPM Adaptor, which is a separate accessory and does not change the speed.
Which cartridge comes on the Planar 2?
Which cartridge comes on the Planar 2?
Every Planar 2 we sell comes with Rega's Nd3 moving magnet factory fitted and aligned. Against Rega's entry Carbon cartridge, the Nd3 has an elliptical stylus rather than a conical one, tracks at 1.75g rather than 2 to 3g, and has 5 to 6mV of output against 2.5mV. It uses Rega's three-point fixing, which sets the alignment when mounted on a Rega arm. If the stylus is ever worn or damaged, Rega's dealer rebuild scheme supplies a rebuilt cartridge with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad.
