Yes, that's literally his cell

At this level, every detail matters: your room, your system, what you’re driving it with, what you’re listening to. I handle these orders personally because an investment like this deserves more than an Add to Cart button. We’ll work through system synergy, I’ll make sure the setup is right, and we’ll coordinate delivery so it arrives exactly how it should. A few of our brands require this direct approach, but at this price point, it’s how I’d do it anyway. Use the button above, or call/text me directly at 410-239-2020.

The Rogue Audio RP-3 is a balanced tube preamplifier with MOSFET output buffering, two pairs of fully balanced XLR inputs and one pair of XLR outputs, and a tube-based headphone amplifier. It fills the gap between the compact RP-1 v2 and the four-tube RP-5, giving buyers who need balanced connectivity and ultra-low output impedance a direct path into Rogue's full-chassis preamp platform at $3,495.

Key Features of the Rogue Audio RP-3

  • Two-Tube Mu-Follower Design: 2x 12AU7/ECC82 in mu-follower topology with MOSFET output buffering for exceptional drive capability
  • Fully Balanced XLR: Two pairs of balanced XLR inputs and one pair of balanced XLR outputs for true balanced signal path
  • Ultra-Low Output Impedance: MOSFET buffered outputs deliver <10 ohm output impedance, driving any power amplifier and any length of interconnect without signal degradation
  • High Gain Structure: 10dB RCA, 16dB XLR, with 10V RMS maximum output (20V XLR) for demanding power amplifiers
  • Tube-Based Headphone Amplifier: High-power tube headphone circuit for full-size and planar magnetic headphones
  • Three RCA Line Inputs: Plus two balanced XLR inputs, two variable RCA outputs, one fixed RCA output, and one balanced XLR output
  • Home Theater Bypass: Unity gain mode for integration with surround processors
  • Processor Loop: Insert external processors (EQ, crossover) into the signal path without rewiring
  • 10-Function Remote: Full-feature remote with volume, mute, source selection, balance, and mono
  • Handcrafted in the USA: Built in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania with a 3-year warranty

Mu-Follower Circuit with MOSFET Output Buffering

The RP-3 pairs Rogue's signature two-tube mu-follower circuit with MOSFET output buffers, combining the harmonic character of tube amplification with the drive capability of solid-state buffering. The two 12AU7/ECC82 tubes handle voltage amplification in the mu-follower topology, where one tube acts as an active load for the other to maximize gain and minimize distortion. The MOSFET output stage then buffers the signal for delivery, dropping the output impedance to below 10 ohms. That near-zero output impedance means the RP-3 drives any power amplifier regardless of input impedance, handles long cable runs without high-frequency rolloff, and maintains full control over the signal all the way to the amplifier's input stage. The result is a frequency response from 5Hz to 100kHz with less than 0.1% THD.

Balanced XLR Connectivity

The RP-3 is Rogue's most affordable preamplifier with balanced XLR connections. Two pairs of balanced XLR inputs and one pair of balanced XLR outputs provide a fully balanced signal path from source to power amplifier when paired with balanced-input components. The balanced output delivers 16dB of gain with a 20V maximum output, providing the voltage swing to drive balanced power amplifiers to full output. Three pairs of single-ended RCA inputs, two pairs of variable RCA outputs, and one pair of fixed RCA outputs handle single-ended sources and connections. This dual-mode connectivity makes the RP-3 a natural choice for systems that mix balanced and single-ended components.

Tube-Based Headphone Amplifier

The RP-3 includes a dedicated tube-based headphone amplifier with enough power to drive demanding planar magnetic and high-impedance dynamic headphones. The tube preamp section shapes the signal before the headphone output stage, giving headphone listening the same harmonic character as the main outputs. For a dedicated headphone listening station with balanced outputs and higher power, Rogue builds the RH-5 Headphone Amplifier.

Full-Chassis Platform

At 18.5 inches wide, 4.5 inches tall, and 30 pounds, the RP-3 shares the full-chassis platform with Rogue's RP-5, RP-7, and RP-9 preamplifiers. The larger chassis accommodates the MOSFET output buffering circuitry, balanced XLR connectors, and a more substantial power supply than the compact RP-1 v2. The machined aluminum faceplate, gold-plated connectors, defeatable OLED display, and slow-start sequencing with auto-mute are standard across the full-chassis RP series. The processor loop accepts external signal processors without rewiring, and the mono button collapses the stereo signal for mono recordings or troubleshooting.

Explore the Full Rogue Audio Preamplifier Series

The RP-3 sits in the middle of Rogue Audio's preamplifier lineup, offering balanced connectivity and MOSFET buffering at a lower price than the RP-7:

  • RP-1 v2: Compact two-tube preamp with built-in MM/MC phono stage and discrete headphone amplifier. $1,995. The entry point for turntable owners who need a phono stage built in.
  • RP-5 v2: Four-tube mu-follower with Triton II-derived phono stage (four gain settings), MOSFET-buffered headphone amplifier, and 0.5dB volume steps. RCA only. $4,295.
  • RP-7 v2: Four-tube design with balanced XLR (2 in, 2 out), MOSFET output buffering, 14dB gain, 30V maximum output, and metal remote. Stereophile Class A Recommended. $5,495.
  • RP-9 v2: Flagship with four 6H30P tubes, 5Hz to 170kHz bandwidth, 2W tube headphone amplifier, and machined aluminum remote. $7,995.

The Rogue preamp series splits into two tracks: models with built-in phono stages (RP-1 v2, RP-5) for turntable-centric systems, and balanced line-stage models (RP-3, RP-7, RP-9) for systems with separate phono preamplifiers or digital-only sources. For a dedicated phono stage to pair with the RP-3, see the Ares II.
