Mu-Follower Circuit with MOSFET Output Buffering

The RP-3 pairs Rogue's signature two-tube mu-follower circuit with MOSFET output buffers, combining the harmonic character of tube amplification with the drive capability of solid-state buffering. The two 12AU7/ECC82 tubes handle voltage amplification in the mu-follower topology, where one tube acts as an active load for the other to maximize gain and minimize distortion. The MOSFET output stage then buffers the signal for delivery, dropping the output impedance to below 10 ohms. That near-zero output impedance means the RP-3 drives any power amplifier regardless of input impedance, handles long cable runs without high-frequency rolloff, and maintains full control over the signal all the way to the amplifier's input stage. The result is a frequency response from 5Hz to 100kHz with less than 0.1% THD.

Balanced XLR Connectivity

The RP-3 is Rogue's most affordable preamplifier with balanced XLR connections. The larger chassis accommodates the MOSFET output buffering circuitry, balanced XLR connectors, and a more substantial power supply than the compact RP-1 v2. The machined aluminum faceplate, gold-plated connectors, defeatable OLED display, and slow-start sequencing with auto-mute are standard across the full-chassis RP series. What's the difference between the RP-3 and the RP-5 v2?

They serve different system priorities. The RP-3 ($3,495) offers balanced XLR connectivity and MOSFET-buffered outputs with ultra-low output impedance (<10 ohms), but has no phono stage. The RP-5 v2 ($4,295) has a Triton II-derived MM/MC phono stage with four gain settings and a MOSFET-buffered headphone amplifier, but is RCA-only with higher output impedance (<100 ohms). Choose the RP-3 if you need balanced connections or drive long cable runs. Choose the RP-5 v2 if vinyl playback is central to your system.

Why does the RP-3 have lower output impedance than the more expensive RP-5?

The RP-3 uses MOSFET output buffering, which drops its output impedance below 10 ohms. The RP-5 v2 does not include MOSFET output buffers in its main signal path (though it uses them in the headphone circuit), resulting in an output impedance below 100 ohms. Both numbers are low enough for normal system use, but the RP-3's near-zero impedance is an advantage for very long cable runs or power amplifiers with unusually low input impedance.

Can I add a phono stage to the RP-3 later?

Yes. Since the RP-3 is a line-stage preamplifier with no built-in phono section, you connect a separate phono preamplifier to one of its three RCA or two XLR line inputs. The Rogue Audio Ares II is a natural match, offering tube-based MM/MC phono amplification that pairs well with Rogue preamps. The Triton II provides a solid-state alternative with four gain settings.

Do I need balanced cables to use the RP-3?

No. The RP-3 works with both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA connections. You can mix and match: use XLR for your primary source and RCA for others, or run entirely single-ended. The balanced connections provide an advantage for long cable runs (over 15 feet) or environments with electrical noise, but for typical home setups with short interconnects, both connection types perform well.

How does the RP-3 compare to the RP-7 v2?

Both use MOSFET output buffering with <10 ohm output impedance and balanced XLR connectivity.
