The Rega Nd9 is more than just a new cartridge; it is the most capable Moving Magnet (MM) design Rega has built. Representing the absolute flagship of Rega's MM range, the Nd9 combines the user-friendly high output of a moving magnet design with the advanced material science typically reserved for high-end Moving Coil (MC) models. It belongs to Rega's Nd range, the first moving magnets to use a Neodymium N55 magnet, the world's most powerful commercially available magnet. That magnet is paired with an ultra-rigid boron cantilever and a Fine Line nude diamond stylus, the same profile Rega fits to its reference Aphelion 2 moving coil cartridge. The result is a cartridge that offers the detail retrieval, transient speed and soundstage width normally associated with a moving coil, all while remaining compatible with standard MM phono stages.
Key Features:
- Neodymium Generator: Part of Rega's Nd range, the first moving magnet cartridges to use an N55 Neodymium magnet, delivering more power than a standard bar magnet design.
- Boron Cantilever: Features a solid Boron rod cantilever, offering exceptional stiffness and low mass for ultra-fast reaction to groove modulations.
- Fine Line Nude Diamond: Equipped with a precision "Fine Line" nude diamond stylus (borrowed from the reference Aphelion 2) for maximum detail retrieval and superior tracking.
- Advanced Generator Geometry: Completely new generator with perfect symmetry and miniaturized parallel coils for accurate channel balance and linearity.
- Glass Filled PPS Body: Housed in a zero-tolerance, injection-moulded polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) body for extreme rigidity and low mass.
- Rega 3-Point Mounting: Designed with Rega’s three-point fixing for a rigid, seamless connection to Rega tonearms. Rega specifies it for Rega tonearms only.
A Convergence of Technologies
The Nd9 bridges the gap between MM and MC. The challenge in creating this masterpiece was connecting the high-power Neodymium magnet system to a solid Boron cantilever. Rega achieved this by collaborating with a luxury watchmaker to fabricate an ultra-fine connecting tube. This engineering feat allows the Nd9 to maintain the high output voltage (5-6mV) of an MM cartridge while gaining the mechanical advantages of a Boron assembly, its stiffness, speed and low resonance, previously the domain of exotic MCs.
Reference-Level Tracking
At the tip of the Boron cantilever sits a Fine Line nude diamond. This complex stylus profile, with a minor radius of just 3µm, presents an exceptionally small contact area to the groove wall. This allows it to trace the most minute high-frequency details and subtle spatial cues that lesser styli simply miss. When combined with the zero-tolerance generator alignment, the Nd9 delivers a level of clarity and channel separation that rivals cartridges costing significantly more.
The Neodymium Advantage
Traditional MM cartridges use heavy bar magnets that can make the moving assembly sluggish. By using Neodymium (Nd) N55, Rega has created a generator that is powerful yet lightweight. This reduction in mass allows the suspension to react faster to transients, resulting in a sound that is punchy, dynamic, and thrillingly alive. The optimized pole gap further enhances linearity, pushing the soundstage wider and deeper than any previous Rega MM design.
Precision Build
Hand-built by skilled technicians in the UK, the Nd9 is housed in a body made from glass-filled Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS). This high-tech material is lightweight yet incredibly rigid, minimizing stress on the tonearm bearings and preventing energy absorption. The cartridge is finished with a distinctive Amber window, marking its status as the leader of the Nd range.

Rega's Three-Point Fixing
Rega cartridges use the company's proprietary three-point fixing rather than the universal two-bolt mount. On a Rega tonearm that makes fitting a direct bolt-on job, with overhang set automatically by the mount itself instead of by protractor. It is the reason a Rega cartridge is the simplest upgrade path for a Rega turntable. A universal-mount cartridge, Hana included, goes on any arm but has to be aligned the long way round.
Can the Nd9 be used on a non-Rega tonearm?
Can the Nd9 be used on a non-Rega tonearm?
Rega specifies the Nd9's three-point fixing as for Rega tonearms only. On a Rega arm it bolts on with three screws; Rega recommends dealer fitting, or its supplied 90-degree Allen key if you fit it yourself.
What does the Nd9 add over the Nd7?
What does the Nd9 add over the Nd7?
A boron cantilever. Both carry Rega's fine line stylus, based on the reference Aphelion 2 moving coil, but the Nd9 bonds it to a solid boron rod in place of the Nd7's aluminum. Rega calls the Nd9 the highest-performing moving magnet cartridge it has ever produced.
Why a boron cantilever?
Why a boron cantilever?
Rega says boron is exceptionally light, so it reacts faster to the record surface, and highly rigid for its mass, so it bends less and transmits motion more accurately with less distortion. Joining the Nd magnet to a solid boron rod was the challenge, which Rega solved with a famous watchmaker making an ultra-fine connecting tube with a different diameter at each end.

Rega offers it factory fitted on the Planar 8, and the Planar 6 RS Edition ships with the Nd9 or the Ania moving coil.
How do I set up and look after the Nd9?
How do I set up and look after the Nd9?
Rega specifies 1.75g of tracking force; output is 5 to 6mV into a moving magnet input. The stylus cannot be replaced by the owner, but Rega's rebuild scheme, through a Rega dealer, returns the cartridge with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad when you trade in the worn one.
