The Rogue Audio M-250 Ultra is a pure tube monoblock amplifier and the new flagship of Rogue Audio's amplifier lineup. A worthy successor to the Apollo Dark, the M-250 Ultra combines a continuous power output of over 250 watts with ruler-flat frequency response, tremendous bandwidth, and vanishingly low distortion. Like every Rogue Audio product, the M-250 Ultra is designed and hand-built in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania.

Should I run the Rogue M-250 Ultra in triode or ultralinear mode?

Try both. The M-250 Ultra switches between the two on the fly, and Rogue says the best choice depends on how the output transformer interacts with your speaker's crossover. It is rated at 250 watts in ultralinear mode with its six KT88s, and Rogue says its triode power is high enough for almost any speaker load. You can flip the switch while music plays, with a small relay click through the speaker. For the speaker terminals, Rogue's rule is the 4-ohm taps for speakers rated under 6 ohms and the 8-ohm taps for 6 ohms and above.

Is it hard to bias the six KT88s in each M-250 Ultra?

Rogue built it to be easy. A meter and an individual switch for each tube let you set every tube to its own operating point: warm the amplifier up for at least 15 minutes, turn the preamplifier off so no signal reaches it, then turn each tube's pot with the supplied bias tool until the meter reads 30mA. Because each tube is set individually, one that fails early can be replaced on its own, without buying a matched set. Rogue recommends checking bias regularly. How long do the KT88 tubes last in the M-250 Ultra?

Rogue puts typical power tube life at about 3,000 hours, roughly three years at a few hours a day, depending on how hard the amplifier is driven. The smaller 12AU7 and 12AX7 tubes typically last at least 5,000 hours. Replace a tube that turns noisy or microphonic, or one that repeatedly blows its fuse. Rogue's US warranty covers the amplifier for three years and the tubes for six months.

Will my preamplifier work with the M-250 Ultra, and should I use XLR or RCA?

Rogue says tube power amplifiers are generally easy for any preamplifier to drive because of their high input impedance. The M-250 Ultra has both a balanced XLR and an RCA input: Rogue recommends XLR for the lowest noise, and RCA when your preamplifier has a high output impedance, to keep full bandwidth. The second input can take a home theater processor, so one pair of amplifiers can serve both systems.

Does the M-250 Ultra need a dedicated circuit or a power conditioner?

Rogue specifies 15A service and supplies high-current power cords. It recommends plugging the amplifiers into the same outlet as the preamplifier to avoid a ground loop, and not using a power conditioner, which may limit the current available. Turn on your sources and preamplifier first and the amplifiers last, turn the amplifiers off first, and wait at least a minute before switching one back on. Each monoblock weighs about 90 pounds, which Rogue notes is not a one-person lift.
