Description

The VIABLUE™ EPC-2 Phono is a precision phono interconnect engineered to carry the lowest-level signal in your hi-fi system without coloration. Silver-plated OFC conductors paired with continuous shielding from plug to plug deliver clean, low-noise signal transfer. VIABLUE's patented T8 aluminum connectors finish the cable with mechanically locked terminations. Hand-assembled in Germany, available in seven termination configurations across single-ended and balanced phono setups.

Key Features
  • Silver-plated OFC conductors: Silvered oxygen-free copper strands optimized for the microvolt-level signal coming off a moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge.
  • Continuous full-length shielding: Shielding runs unbroken from connector body to connector body, so RFI and EMI cannot leak in at the most vulnerable points of the signal chain.
  • Patented T8 connectors: Precision-machined aluminum housings with gold-plated contacts. Same connector family used across VIABLUE's premium reference cables.
  • 5-Pin DIN SME tonearm options: Straight, 90° up, and 90° down DIN terminations to fit the physical layout of nearly any modern tonearm with the SME-standard 5-pin connector.
  • Single-ended and balanced phono support: RCA terminations for standard phono inputs, plus XLR options for balanced phono preamps that benefit from common-mode noise rejection.
  • Dedicated ground spades: Separate ground wire with spade-lug terminations for clean chassis grounding between turntable and phono stage.
  • Hand-finished Cobra braided sleeve: VIABLUE's signature multi-tone woven jacket as standard. Custom sleeve colors available on request.
  • Made in Germany: Every cable assembled by hand in VIABLUE's Malsch facility. Quality control on every connector solder joint and shield termination.

Built for the Phono Signal Specifically

A phono cable's job is harder than a line-level interconnect. The signal leaving a moving-coil cartridge can be 1000 times smaller than a line-level signal, so any noise picked up between cartridge and preamp gets amplified along with the music. The EPC-2 Phono is shielded continuously from one connector to the other, which closes the gap where most phono cables leak noise: at the plug body itself. Silver-plated OFC strands carry the signal, polyethylene insulation keeps capacitance low across the frequency range, and the connector housings are solid aluminum rather than plated plastic.

T8 Connector System

The T8 connector is VIABLUE's patented termination platform, used across their reference cable lines. Each T8 housing is machined from solid aluminum, with gold-plated contacts and color-coded channel-marker rings (red and black or red and white) for quick orientation in a busy rack. The RCA and DIN versions thread onto the cable jacket for a mechanically locked union, so the connection between cable and plug is not relying on solder strain alone.

DIN-SME Tonearm Configurations

Most premium tonearms (Rega, SME, Linn, Origin Live, and many others) exit through a 5-pin DIN connector at the base of the arm. The EPC-2 Phono ships in three DIN-SME orientations to fit physical layouts where a straight plug would foul the plinth or arm board:

  • Straight DIN SME: Cable exits directly back from the tonearm base. Standard for most turntables.
  • 90° DIN SME up: Cable bends upward at the DIN connector. Useful when the cable needs to clear plinth obstructions.
  • 90° DIN SME down: Cable bends downward at the DIN connector. Used when routing the cable beneath the plinth or through a cutout.

RCA and XLR Output Options

From the tonearm side, the EPC-2 Phono terminates in your choice of T8 RCA (standard single-ended phono input) or T8 XLR (balanced phono input). XLR phono inputs are increasingly common at the higher tier of phono preamps because the balanced topology rejects common-mode noise picked up along the cable run, which is exactly the kind of noise a phono signal cannot tolerate. If your phono preamp has XLR inputs, the XLR EPC-2 is the way to take advantage of them.

Shielding and Cable Construction

The cable cross-section shows VIABLUE's layered approach: silver-plated OFC signal conductors centered, polyethylene dielectric for low capacitance, then multiple shielding layers (spiral and foil) bonded under the outer braided jacket. The shield is continuous from one connector to the other, terminated to the connector body so there is no break in the Faraday cage around the signal conductors. Outer braid is woven nylon for durability and a low-microphonic feel.

Cobra Braided Sleeve (Custom Colors Available)

Every EPC-2 Phono ships in VIABLUE's signature Cobra woven jacket, a multi-tone braid that catches light and announces itself in a rack. Cobra is the standard finish we stock. If you want a different sleeve color (Black, Blue, Race, Stone, Flag, and other VIABLUE options), add the VIABLUE Cable Colors Add-On to your order and we will route your build through VIABLUE's custom-color program.

Hand-Built in Germany

Every EPC-2 Phono is assembled by hand at VIABLUE's facility in Malsch, Germany. The terminations are soldered, the shield is bonded to the connector body, the strain relief is set, and the cable is bench-tested before it ships. Custom lengths and configurations (the ones not currently stocked in the US) are built to order in approximately 5 to 6 weeks total: 10 to 12 business days of bench assembly in Germany plus shipping to the US.

Where the EPC-2 Sits in the VIABLUE Lineup

The EPC-2 Phono is the accessible entry point into VIABLUE's tonearm-cable program. If you want the same T8 connector system with heavier shielding, a thicker conductor bundle, ferrite filters in the splitter, and the company's full quadruple-shielding specification, step up to the VIABLUE NF-S5 Phono Cable. The EPC-2 is the right call if you are upgrading from the stock cable that came with your turntable or tonearm; the NF-S5 is the right call if you are at the level of system where every detail audibly matters.

FAQ

Which DIN-SME orientation should I order: straight, 90 degrees up, or 90 degrees down?

The orientation refers to how the 5-pin DIN connector exits the tonearm base. Straight is the standard choice for most turntables where the cable can run directly behind the tonearm without obstruction. Choose 90 degrees up if your plinth has a raised wall or the cable needs to clear a structure above the arm base. Choose 90 degrees down when the cable needs to drop through a hole in the plinth or route beneath the table. If you are unsure, look at where your existing tonearm cable exits and match that orientation. The audio performance is identical across all three.

Does the EPC-2 Phono work with both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges?

Yes. The EPC-2 Phono is built for the full range of phono signal levels, from the higher output of a moving-magnet cartridge down to the microvolt-level signal of a low-output moving coil. Its silver-plated OFC conductors and continuous shielding are specifically engineered for the low-noise demands of the phono signal regardless of cartridge type. The dedicated ground spade connects to your phono preamp's ground post to complete the chassis-to-chassis ground loop, which is critical for both MM and MC setups.

When should I choose the XLR version over the RCA version?

Choose the XLR version if your phono preamp has balanced XLR phono inputs. Balanced phono inputs are increasingly common on higher-end phono stages because the balanced topology rejects common-mode noise picked up along the cable run, which is the kind of noise a microvolt phono signal cannot tolerate. The cartridge itself is inherently a balanced source, so running balanced from tonearm to phono preamp preserves the native signal topology. If your phono preamp only has RCA inputs, the RCA version is the correct choice; XLR-to-RCA adapters should be avoided in the phono signal path.

How does the EPC-2 Phono compare to the VIABLUE NF-S5 Phono?

Both cables share the same patented T8 connector platform, silver-plated OFC conductor philosophy, and the same set of termination configurations. The NF-S5 is the step-up cable: thicker conductor bundle, VIABLUE's quadruple-shielding specification, ferrite filters built into the splitter, and proportionally heavier construction throughout. The EPC-2 is the accessible entry into VIABLUE's tonearm program and the right upgrade from a stock turntable cable. The NF-S5 makes sense at the level of system where the last few percent of resolution and noise floor audibly matters. See the NF-S5 Phono Cable for the full step-up specification.
