Description

The Chord Electronics Ultima Integrated is a 125-watt integrated amplifier that puts the ULTIMA dual feed-forward error correction topology and a full preamp section into a single chassis. Four inputs (one XLR balanced, three RCA), an AV bypass, a pre-out, and 16 proprietary MOSFET output devices make this a complete amplification solution for systems that do not need separates. It is the only integrated amplifier in the ULTIMA range.

  • ULTIMA dual feed-forward error correction topology
  • 16 proprietary MOSFET output transistors with close channel matching
  • Four inputs: 1x XLR balanced, 3x RCA single-ended
  • AV bypass input for home theater integration
  • Pre-out for adding an external power amplifier
  • Pure analog signal path
  • Proprietary high-frequency switch-mode power supply
Why We Carry Chord Electronics

Chord Electronics has been doing digital conversion differently since 1989. While every other manufacturer buys off-the-shelf DAC chips, Rob Watts designs custom FPGA algorithms with tap lengths that dwarf anything from ESS or AKM. Their proprietary Pulse Array technology, MOSFET amplification stages, and high-frequency switch-mode power supplies are all designed and built in Kent, England. From the portable Mojo 2 to the flagship DAVE, every product runs code that Chord wrote themselves.

Why an Ultima Integrated Exists

Most manufacturers put their best technology in separates and offer integrated amplifiers as a compromise. Chord went the other direction. The Ultima Integrated uses the same dual feed-forward error correction circuit found in the Ultima 6 and Ultima 5 power amplifiers. The preamp section shares its design philosophy with the Ultima Pre 3. The difference is packaging: one box instead of two, with a shared power supply and shorter internal signal paths. For a system built around a single source (a Chord DAC, a streamer, a CD transport), the Integrated eliminates the interconnect between preamp and power amp entirely.

ULTIMA Topology at 125 Watts

The dual feed-forward error correction circuit monitors and corrects the output signal at two points in the amplification chain, catching distortion that single-loop feedback designs miss. At 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the Ultima Integrated has enough power for most speakers in typical listening rooms. The 16 proprietary MOSFET output transistors are closely matched between channels, maintaining stereo imaging accuracy even at high output. This is not a stripped-down version of the ULTIMA circuit. It is the same topology with a power output scaled to what an integrated amplifier reasonably needs.

AV Bypass and Pre-Out

The AV bypass input lets a home theater processor pass signal through the Ultima Integrated directly to the power amplifier section, skipping volume control. When the system switches to music, the Integrated takes over. The pre-out on the rear panel lets you add a separate power amplifier if you outgrow the internal 125 watts, turning the Integrated into a preamplifier feeding an Ultima 6 or Ultima 5 while keeping the same source switching and volume control.

Chord Electronics Ultima Integrated Power Supply

Chord's proprietary high-frequency switch-mode power supply delivers current to the amplifier stages faster than conventional toroidal designs. The SMPS operates above the audio band, so its switching frequency cannot interfere with the signal. In an integrated amplifier where the preamp and power amp share a chassis, keeping power supply noise out of the sensitive preamp stages matters even more than in separates. Chord's approach isolates the power delivery from the audio signal by frequency, not just by physical distance.

The ULTIMA Range

The Ultima Integrated is the simplest path into ULTIMA-level amplification. For those who want separates, the Ultima Pre 3 preamplifier and Ultima 6 power amplifier provide the same technology with more flexibility and upgrade potential. All ULTIMA products share the dual feed-forward topology and proprietary MOSFET output stage, designed and built in Kent, England. Available in black or silver finish.

Reviews

To sum up, I found the Chord Ultima Integrated both thrilling and soothing to listen to. It provided an abundance of organic detail and made music sound lucid. Instruments were recreated with incredible physicality, while vocalists were nothing less than embodied. The British amplifier excelled with touch and timbre and enthralled with melodious tone. As refined as the Ultima Integrated could sound, it could also be grandiose, delivering thunderous dynamics with sledgehammer-like weight and scale. No one amplifier can be everything to everyone, but the Chord Ultima Integrated is nothing less than sublime. ... I was astounded that the Chord Integrated's delivery was weightier and more thunderous than the Bryston monoblocks. Midrange, especially with vocals, was more lifelike through the Ultima Integrated--smoother and more liquid, if not quite as revealing of microdetail. There was also a greater sense of inner warmth in tone through the Ultima Integrated.

This is one seriously capable integrated amplifier. With the superb Hey Nineteen from Steely Dan's Gaucho album, you can immediately hear the control of the Ultima. I loved its rendition of the punchy, staccato rhythm and the excellent bass grip. Drums were dynamic and detailed in their presentation, and those stabbing synth bursts had power and poise. Vocals were open and articulate, and the whole track moved well with a compelling and tight rhythmic push. ... Overall then, this amplifier offers exceptional performance and is surprisingly even-handed with it -- no musical genre gets preferential treatment. Whatever I threw at it, it took in its stride -- from the hard rock of John Mellencamp to the smooth jazz of Fourplay. It sounds powerful, poised, articulate and dynamic, reveals all the layers of a recording, and gels beautifully together into a coherent whole. ... The beautifully built and finished Chord Electronics Ultima Integrated amplifier is not inexpensive but still represents fine value for money. At this price, it is, of course, up against stiff competition, but I still came away quite beguiled by it. During my time reviewing it, I grew to like the Ultima Integrated a lot, and I can say with confidence that if you are in the market for a high-end integrated amplifier, you'd be foolish not to have it on your shortlist. It really is an essential audition.

Based on 3rd party opinions gathered so far, I expected a lean and clean sound, strong on transient attack but less focused on body, sustain, or tonal saturation, and perhaps bordering on sterile. Well, let me tell you, the Ultima Integrated is one heck of a smooth performer! Tonally rich, well-saturated, liquid, and relaxed, it is 100% the inverse of what I anticipated. ... With either DAC, the Ultima Integrated sounds beautifully clean and uncolored but simultaneously lush and relaxed. The bass is royal, rich, and mellow, not super-incisive or very articulate, but fast-paced and never slow. This is a special combination I have not heard before: bass that is unforced, voluptuous, and free-flowing but still fast. No doubt, Chord's special power supply has much to do with this. ... The Chord Ultima Integrated is not just about a visually pleasing industrial aesthetic; it offers a unique blend of appealing virtues and is very much a music lover's amplifier. The Ultima Integrated sounds beautifully clean and neutral but simultaneously smooth and unforced while offering a touch of warmth, culminating in a lyrical and emotionally engaging performance.

Video review of the Chord Electronics Ultima Integrated amplifier from Pursuit Perfect System.

Pursuit Perfect System,Pursuit Perfect System · January 2024

"The first one is the fluidity of the music. How the music or the rhythm of the music flows along with a really rock solid tempo. You feel like this amplifier is in complete control of the music and it delivers the vibe of the music really on point." "The vocals have a palpable authenticity or realism about them that is super standout. It sounds like a person or a voice is singing direct into a microphone. It was also delivered with excellent or authentic or very realistic tone or timbre." "The Chord bass is very tight, very pronounced, it is ultra articulate and really punchy and full at times. For bass detail, the Chord really is fantastic."

Terry Ellis,Pursuit Perfect System · June 2024

"The first big positive that jumped out to me was the scale of the system sound with its perception of extended dynamic range. Treble details that extend up to being almost ceiling height at times with a good solid bass that is obviously extended." "The bit that stood out to me was the dynamic shifts. The way the music was able to go from maybe quiet or small, to big, to bigger, to bigger still, fully staying composed. The shift in the dynamics was so fast and so smoothly delivered." "It is not hifi trying to make music sound romantic or overly pleasing. It is about making music sound lively, dynamic, and expressive through its energetic honesty."

HiFi Huff,HiFi Huff · September 2024

"The midrange is the star of the show with the Chord in my opinion. Instead of the vocals being pushed back behind the stage or even with the speakers, what the Chord is doing here is pushing the voices a little bit forward, and this makes it sort of 3D into the room." "The bass of the Chord Ultima is pretty awesome. It is very, very extended. It is bringing me more bass impact and power than my reference Nagra gear, but it is also pretty tuneful and musical, but yet controlled at the same time. Nothing here is sloppy at all." "Going to something like a Luxman 509z, the modern day Luxman sound is a more tipped up treble, a little bit leaner in the mids. The Ultima is a little warmer, a little more seductive."

FAQ

Is the Chord Ultima Integrated configured for US voltage?

Yes. All units sold through The Listening Room are configured for US voltage (120V/60Hz) and include a US power cord. No transformer or adapter is needed.

Can I use the Ultima Integrated as just a power amplifier?

Yes. The Ultima Integrated has a pre-out that lets you bypass its internal preamp section and feed an external preamplifier or DAC with volume control directly to the power amp stage. The AV bypass input also allows integration with a home theater processor, using the Ultima Integrated purely as a 125-watt power amplifier for the front channels.

What inputs does the Ultima Integrated have?

Five inputs: two balanced XLR and three single-ended RCA, plus an AV bypass input. It also has a pre-out for connecting an external power amplifier or subwoofer. All signal routing is handled from the front panel or the included remote control.

How does the Ultima Integrated compare to separate Chord pre and power amps?

The Ultima Integrated uses the same ULTIMA dual feed-forward error correction topology as the separate components, delivering 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Separates offer more power (the Ultima 6 is 180W, the Ultima 5 is 350W), more inputs, and dedicated power supply isolation between preamp and power amp stages. The Integrated puts ULTIMA topology in a single chassis at a lower price point.
