The Cambridge Audio SX50 Bookshelf Speakers are proof that you don't need a massive footprint to enjoy massive sound. Designed for smaller rooms or tight spaces where floor real estate is at a premium, these speakers deliver a surprisingly rich and detailed audio performance that belies their compact dimensions. By adhering to the "Great British Sound" philosophy, the SX50s strip away audio coloration to reveal the music exactly as it was recorded—dynamic, engaging, and delightfully natural.
The SX50 is engineered to solve a common problem: how to get high-fidelity sound into small spaces. Despite measuring just 225mm in height, these speakers utilize a high-excursion 135mm (5.25") mid/bass driver made from treated paper. This material strikes the perfect balance between stiffness and lightness, allowing the cone to move quickly for accurate transients while maintaining the structural integrity needed for punchy bass. The result is a sound that feels full and authoritative, even when the speakers are tucked away on a shelf.
Great sound is about balance, and the SX50 pairs its capable woofer with a sophisticated 25mm (1") silk dome tweeter. Unlike harder materials that can sound harsh in near-field listening environments (like a desk), the silk dome offers a smooth, non-fatiguing high-frequency response. A foam damper positioned behind the tweeter diaphragm reduces internal reflections, ensuring that vocals and instruments are projected with a spacious, airy quality that fills the room without becoming sharp.
Every element of the SX50's construction is focused on audio purity. The cabinet is built from rigid MDF and designed using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to minimize standing waves and cabinet vibration, ensuring you hear the music, not the box. A precision-tuned crossover ensures a phase-linear transition between the drivers, while the rear-firing bass reflex port adds critical depth to the low end, giving these small speakers a warm, substantial presence that defies their size.
