The Rogue Audio RP-1 v2 is a tube preamplifier that does what most preamps twice its price can't: it handles your turntable, your headphones, and your home theater in a single chassis, all through a pair of 12AU7 tubes that sound like they belong in something far more expensive. Phono stage with real MC gain. Discrete headphone amp that actually drives cans. Home theater bypass that just works. Hand-built in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania by people who care about what comes out of your speakers, the RP-1 v2 is where Rogue's preamp lineup begins, and for a lot of listeners, it's where the search ends.
Key Features of the Rogue Audio RP-1 v2
-
Mu-Follower Tube Circuit: Two 12AU7/ECC802 tubes in a mu-follower topology deliver the open, dynamic presentation Rogue is known for, with low output impedance for easy amplifier matching.
-
Onboard MM/MC Phono Stage: User-adjustable gain (44dB or 56dB) and cartridge loading accommodate everything from affordable moving-magnet cartridges to serious moving-coil designs.
-
Discrete Headphone Amplifier: A dedicated solid-state headphone amp delivers 1 watt into 32 ohms through the front-panel 1/4-inch jack, with enough power to drive most headphones without a separate unit.
-
OLED Display: The v2 upgrade replaces the previous LCD with a bright, high-contrast OLED panel that shows input selection, volume level, and system status. It can be toggled off for a cleaner look.
-
Home Theater Bypass: Unity-gain passthrough lets the RP-1 v2 integrate into a surround system without volume conflicts, passing the signal straight through to your power amplifier.
-
Four Line Inputs + Dedicated Phono: Five total inputs (four line-level pairs and one phono pair) handle a full source stack without the need for an external switcher.
-
Flexible Output Configuration: Two pairs of variable outputs and one pair of fixed outputs accommodate bi-amping, subwoofer feeds, or recording setups.
-
Hand-Crafted in the USA: Designed and built by hand in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania, with a machined aluminum faceplate and gold-plated RCA jacks.
Rogue Audio RP-1 v2 Tube Circuit Design
The RP-1 v2 is built on Rogue's RP-X platform, a circuit architecture shared across their preamp lineup. At its core, a pair of 12AU7/ECC802 tubes operate in a mu-follower configuration, a topology that uses one tube as the gain stage and the second as a constant-current source load. The result is high linearity, wide bandwidth (1Hz to 75kHz), and an output impedance of just 750 ohms, low enough to drive virtually any power amplifier without cable-length concerns. Total harmonic distortion measures under 0.1%, and a slow-start turn-on sequence protects both the tubes and your speakers during warmup.

Built-In Phono Stage
The onboard phono stage handles both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges with user-adjustable gain settings of 44dB (MM) and 56dB (MC). RIAA equalization accuracy is within 0.1dB, and the 40mV overload threshold gives plenty of headroom for high-output cartridges. Adjustable cartridge loading lets you fine-tune the presentation for your specific cartridge. For many systems, this eliminates the need for a standalone phono preamplifier entirely.
Headphone Amplifier
Rather than tapping the main output through a resistor, Rogue gave the RP-1 v2 a fully discrete solid-state headphone amplifier. It delivers 1 watt into 32 ohms through the front-panel 1/4-inch jack. The headphone output mutes the main outputs automatically, so you can switch between speakers and headphones without touching the rear panel or adjusting connections.
Connectivity and Outputs
The rear panel carries four pairs of line-level RCA inputs, one dedicated phono input pair, two pairs of variable outputs (volume-controlled), and one pair of fixed outputs. The home theater bypass input provides unity-gain passthrough for integration with a surround processor. All connections use gold-plated RCA jacks for reliable, low-resistance contact. A detachable IEC power cord rounds out the rear panel.

What's Different in the RP-1 v2 vs. the V1?
The v2 keeps everything that made the original RP-1 a hit and refines the details that matter. Updated circuit boards lower the noise floor, upgraded bypass capacitors and resistors in the signal path improve clarity and dynamics, and the plastic remote has been replaced with a solid metal unit. The most visible change is the new OLED display, replacing the original LCD panel with a brighter, higher-contrast screen. Here's how they compare:

The included seven-button metal remote handles volume, balance, input selection, and mute from your listening position. It also toggles the OLED display on and off. The auto-mute feature engages at power-on and power-off to prevent any transient noise from reaching your speakers.
Explore the Full Rogue Audio Preamp Lineup
The RP-1 v2 is the entry point to Rogue Audio's preamp range. For a step up, the Rogue Audio RP-3 adds balanced XLR outputs and a more sophisticated power supply. The RP-5 v2 and RP-7 v2 move further upscale with dual-mono designs and premium tube complements. If you need dedicated phono amplification beyond the RP-1 v2's built-in stage, the Ares II is Rogue's standalone tube phono preamplifier.
