The AVM Ovation PAS 8.3 S is a streaming preamplifier with a tube output stage. It brings AVM's X-Stream Engine, the S-DAC with ESS 9038 PRO converters, an adjustable MM and MC phono input, HDMI ARC and a headphone amplifier into one 43 cm aluminum chassis, with RCA and XLR outputs for your power amplifier.
AVM's 2026 overview calls the PAS 8.3 S a tube preamplifier. It is a preamp in the Ovation S line, handcrafted in Malsch, Germany, with a newly developed phono stage and AVM's S-DAC.
Key Features of the AVM Ovation PAS 8.3 S
- Tube Output Stage: AVM's tube line stage sets the character of the PAS 8.3 S, with customizable RGB tube illumination.
- Analog Passive Volume Control: A newly designed analog passive volume control.
- S-DAC With ESS 9038 PRO: A Double-Quad DAC with four DACs per channel, up to 384 kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD256.
- X-Stream Engine Streaming: Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect (MAX), AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, internet radio and Bluetooth 5.0, plus AVM's RoomConneXion multiroom function.
- MM and MC Phono Input: Four gain settings plus impedance and capacitance adjustment, set from the app or the front panel.
- HDMI ARC and Four Digital Inputs: HDMI ARC, two coaxial and two optical inputs, USB-C audio and USB-A for hard drives.
- Headphone Amplifier: A 6.3 mm output driven by a discrete Class A/B headphone amplifier.
- Tone Control and Power Filtering: Tone control and parametric loudness with a bypass function, and integrated power filtering AVM calls a Mini Power Conditioner.
- RC 5 Remote: The full-aluminum RC 5 with freely assignable comfort keys, plus the RC-X app.
What Does the Tube Output Stage Do?
The PAS 8.3 S sends its output through a tube line stage, and AVM describes the character it gives as warm, spacious and alive. A newly designed analog passive volume control sets the level, and the tube illumination is customizable in RGB.
In AVM's measurements for the analog preamplifier, distortion is below 0.02% and the signal-to-noise ratio is above 98 dB, with a -3 dB frequency response from below 5 Hz to above 30 kHz. The preamp output reaches 5.4 V and the line output runs at 2.5 V.

S-DAC and the X-Stream Engine
The S-DAC module uses the ESS 9038 PRO Double-Quad DAC with four DACs per channel and plays PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD256. AVM also offers the module as a retrofit upgrade for earlier AVM components, the MP, CS and SD 6.3 and 8.3 models.
Streaming runs on the X-Stream Engine, with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect (MAX), AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, HighResAudio and internet radio, plus Bluetooth 5.0 and AVM RoomConneXion for multiroom audio. The PAS 8.3 S connects by LAN or dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), and you control it from the RC-X app.
Phono Input for MM and MC Cartridges
The newly developed phono input stage processes moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges entirely in the analog domain. You set gain, impedance and capacitance from the app or the front panel.
Moving-magnet gain is 40, 45, 50 or 55 dB, and moving-coil gain is 55, 60, 65 or 70 dB. Moving-coil impedance offers seven values from 100 ohms to 2k ohms, and moving-magnet capacitance offers seven values from 47 to 410 pF. RIAA equalization is accurate to within 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
Inputs, Outputs and Headphones
HDMI ARC brings a TV's sound in, alongside two coaxial and two optical digital inputs (up to 192 kHz/24-bit on coax, 96 kHz/24-bit on optical), USB-C audio from a computer and USB-A for hard drives. The analog inputs are one RCA and one XLR high-level input, and they can be set up for home theater throughput.
The PAS 8.3 S has RCA preamp and line outputs and an XLR output for your power amplifier, plus coaxial and optical digital outputs that can run at variable volume. The 6.3 mm headphone output has its own discrete Class A/B amplifier with a 15-ohm output impedance. A trigger input, two 12 V trigger outputs and an external IR input tie it into a larger system.

Silver, Brushed Black or Cellini Chrome
The PAS 8.3 S comes in silver, brushed black or the Cellini edition with a chrome fascia, in AVM's screwless precision aluminum enclosure at the classic 43 cm width. It is handcrafted in Malsch with a multi-day burn-in period, and AVM ships every Ovation model in a robust AVM flight case.
Who Is AVM?
