The AVM Ovation PA 8.3 is a modular analog preamplifier: you build it from plug-in input and output modules, including a tube output, phono, tone control, line and DAC cards. The signal routing is fully balanced and DC-coupled, and AVM's 2026 overview lists room for up to eight input modules and three output modules.
The PA 8.3 does not stream. It is AVM's analog route to a high-end preamp, ready to play with a minimal configuration of one input card and one output card, with chrome-plated, ball-bearing rotary controls and an RC 3 remote.
Key Features of the AVM Ovation PA 8.3
- Modular Inputs and Outputs: Up to eight input modules and three output modules, chosen to suit your system.
- Tube or Transistor Output: A tube output module or a transistor output module, each with its own measured performance.
- Fully Balanced, DC-Coupled Routing: Fully balanced and DC-coupled signal routing.
- Electronic Volume Control: A precise electronic volume control sets the level.
- Phono and Digital Cards: An MM/MC phono card and a digital input card with USB, coaxial and optical inputs.
- Chrome-Plated Controls and OLED Display: Ball-bearing rotary controls and a generous OLED display.
- RC 3 Remote: The RC 3 remote control is included.
How Does the Modular PA 8.3 Work?
The PA 8.3 is a base unit with slots for plug-in modules. AVM's 2026 overview gives it room for up to eight input modules and up to three output modules, and AVM's page lists the minimal configuration as one input card and one output card, so plan at least one of each with the base unit.
The modules on the current AVM price list are the tone control input module, the Line-In module with RCA and XLR inputs, the MM/MC phono module and the Digital-In module for inputs, and the tube output module, the transistor Output module and the fixed-level Line-Out module for outputs. Because the PA 8.3 is modular, you can add cards as your system changes.

Tube Output or Transistor Output
AVM publishes separate figures for the two output types. With the transistor (semiconductor) output, the signal-to-noise ratio is above 100 dB, distortion is below 0.001% and the frequency response runs from below 20 Hz to above 100 kHz. With the tube output, the signal-to-noise ratio is above 90 dB, distortion is below 0.01% and the response runs from below 20 Hz to above 30 kHz.
The base unit takes input signals from 20 mV to 450 mV (adjustable, for 1 V out), with a high-level input impedance of 3.4 kohm on RCA and 13.6 kohm on XLR. Its outputs deliver up to 6 V on RCA and XLR, at 47 ohms and 94 ohms output impedance.
Phono and Digital Input Cards
AVM's phono input card handles MM and MC cartridges. MM loading is 47 kohm with capacitance adjustable from 47 to 420 pF and gain from 43 to 52 dB. MC impedance is adjustable from 47 ohms to 1 kohm, with gain from 63 to 72 dB. RIAA equalization is accurate to within 0.2 dB, and the card has a third-order 20 Hz subsonic filter.
The digital input card takes coaxial and optical S/P-DIF and USB-B. It has switchable upsampling and downsampling up to 384 kHz/32-bit. Over USB it plays PCM up to 96 kHz/24-bit without a driver, and with a driver PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit plus DSD64 and DSD128.

Silver, Black or Cellini
The PA 8.3 comes in silver, black or Cellini, with chrome-plated, ball-bearing rotary controls and a generous OLED display. It measures 430 x 130 x 390 mm and weighs 12 kg, and AVM ships every Ovation model in a robust AVM flight case.

Will the AVM PA 8.3 work on US 120-volt power?
Will the AVM PA 8.3 work on US 120-volt power?
AVM lists the PA 8.3's supply voltage as 115 V / 60 Hz or 230 V / 50 Hz, and the 115 V / 60 Hz rating matches the US supply.
Does the AVM PA 8.3 have a DAC or a phono stage?
Does the AVM PA 8.3 have a DAC or a phono stage?
Both are plug-in cards. The phono card takes MM and MC cartridges, with MM capacitance from 47 to 420 pF and MC impedance from 47 ohms to 1 kohm. The digital input card takes coaxial, optical and USB-B, with upsampling to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD64 and DSD128 over USB with a driver. The PA 8.3 does not stream; AVM's PAS 8.3 S is the streaming preamp in the same line.
