AVM Ovation AS 8.3 S Streaming Integrated Amplifier

The AVM Ovation AS 8.3 S is a hybrid streaming integrated amplifier: a tube line stage in its preamplifier section, a power stage AVM says drives even the most demanding loudspeakers, and AVM's X-Stream Engine for hi-res streaming. An adjustable MM and MC phono input and HDMI ARC for the TV are built in, inside a screwless aluminum enclosure 43 cm wide and handcrafted in Malsch, Germany.

The AS 8.3 S is an integrated amplifier in AVM's new "S" line, with S for Super, and AVM calls it the finest integrated amplifier it has ever built. AVM describes it as the heart of a modern music system that makes towers of separate components and tangles of cables obsolete.

What Does the Tube Line Stage Do in the AS 8.3 S?

The AS 8.3 S runs its preamplifier section through a tube line stage, and AVM's 2026 overview describes it as a hybrid integrated amplifier with a tube preamplifier section. AVM credits the tubes with warmth and spaciousness, while the power stage drives demanding loudspeakers. The tube illumination is adjustable.

The AS 8.3 S is part of the launch of AVM's "S" line, which AVM calls the absolute pinnacle of its engineering.

Power Stage and Two Pairs of Speakers

AVM states that the power stage of the AS 8.3 S drives even the most demanding loudspeakers, precisely and with control. Speaker outputs A and B take two pairs of speakers.

The line output runs at 2.5 V. In the analog preamplifier AVM rates distortion below 0.02% and the signal-to-noise ratio above 98 dB, with a -3 dB frequency response from below 5 Hz to above 30 kHz.

S-DAC and the X-Stream Engine

The S-DAC module is built around the ESS 9038 PRO, with four DACs per channel working in parallel. It plays PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD256. AVM also offers the S-DAC as a retrofit for older series.

Streaming runs on the AVM X-Stream Engine, with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect (MAX), AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, HighResAudio and internet radio, plus Bluetooth 5.0. AVM RoomConneXion adds whole-home multiroom audio. The AS 8.3 S connects by LAN or dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), and you control it from the RC-X app.

Phono Input for MM and MC Cartridges

The newly developed phono input takes moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges and processes the signal entirely in the analog domain. You switch between MM and MC and set impedance, capacitance and gain in the app or on the unit.

Moving-magnet gain is 40, 45, 50 or 55 dB, and moving-coil gain is 55, 60, 65 or 70 dB. Moving-coil impedance offers seven values from 100 ohms to 2k ohms, and moving-magnet capacitance offers seven values from 47 to 410 pF. RIAA equalization is accurate to within 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

HDMI ARC, Digital and Analog Connections

HDMI ARC brings your TV's sound into the AS 8.3 S. Four digital inputs (two coaxial, two optical) accept up to 192 kHz/24-bit on coax and 96 kHz/24-bit on optical. USB-C takes audio from a computer at up to DSD128 or 192 kHz/24-bit, and USB-A reads external hard drives formatted NTFS or FAT.

The analog inputs are one RCA and one XLR high-level input with adjustable attenuation, and they can be set up for home theater throughput. Two digital outputs (coaxial and optical) can run at variable volume. A trigger input, an external IR sensor input and two sequentially switched trigger outputs tie the AS 8.3 S into a larger system.

Headphones, Tone Control and the RC 5 Remote

The 6.3 mm headphone output on the front has its own discrete Class A/B amplifier with an output impedance of 15 ohms. Tone control and parametric loudness come with a bypass function and can also be set from the RC-X app.

The dimmable OLED graphic display has a proximity sensor, and the menus cover a home theater loop, adjustable input sensitivity and custom input labels. The included RC 5 remote has individually assignable comfort buttons.

Silver, Brushed Black or Cellini Chrome

The AS 8.3 S comes in aluminum silver or brushed black, and as a Cellini version with a chrome front. It is handcrafted in Malsch with meticulous quality control and a multi-day burn-in period. AVM ships every Ovation model in a robust AVM flight case.
