"This is, by any standards (entry level or otherwise), a first-rate amplifier. For starters, it has an impressive power output. Not only does it go loud; it does so with some grace, and in particular it stays consistent in sound as the volume is turned up to quite impressive levels" "Another quality the amplifier brings to the table is an unusually fine bass. It's rich but pure and unerringly tuneful, as well as being essentially free of the romantic haze that persists with some valve amps." "The main qualities of the Unico Primo, then, are its generous output, its consistency with level, its tuneful bass and its ability to keep its act together when things become difficult and potentially messy"

The Unison Research Unico Primo is a hybrid integrated amplifier that pairs a Class A ECC83 triode tube input stage with a Dynamic Class A MOSFET output stage, delivering more than 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms. It is the entry point to the Unico line, hand-built in Treviso, Italy, and it brings the tonal warmth of a tube preamp to the grip and reliability of solid-state power. The version we sell ships with the moving-magnet/moving-coil phono board factory-installed, so a turntable plugs straight in.
Key Features of the Unison Research Unico Primo
- Hybrid valve/solid-state design: an ECC83 (12AX7) triode runs in Class A as the only gain stage, feeding a complementary POWER MOSFET output stage.
- Over 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms: enough current and headroom to drive a wide range of real-world bookshelf and floorstanding speakers.
- Factory-installed MM/MC phono stage: switchable between moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, ready for vinyl out of the box (a paid option on the bare unit).
- Short, pure signal path: after the input selector and Alps volume potentiometer, the signal passes a single polypropylene capacitor and the tube, with no other capacitors in the path.
- Dual speaker binding posts: two pairs of terminals per channel for bi-wiring.
- Subwoofer output: a dedicated RCA sub-out lets you build a 2.1 or 2.2 system without changing amplifiers.
- Wood-trimmed remote control: a motorized volume remote that also operates a matching Unison Research CD player.
What Dynamic Class A Means
Unison Research calls the Unico Primo's output stage "Dynamic Class A." A microchip regulates the bias so the MOSFET output devices are never switched fully off, even on signal peaks, which keeps the amplifier out of the harder-edged territory that classic Class A/B designs can fall into. It is not pure Class A, and it does not run hot the way a pure Class A amplifier would, but it holds the output devices in their most linear region for the bulk of normal listening. The result is a hybrid that reads as smooth and composed rather than as either a sharp solid-state amp or a soft, romantic valve amp.
Design and Build Quality
The Unico Primo is built around a large in-house toroidal transformer, Italian-made Itelcond aluminum capacitors, and copper internal wiring. Unison Research winds its own transformers in Treviso and designates each one for a specific model, so nothing here is an off-the-rack part. The slim chassis hides real mass: at 14 kg the amplifier feels planted, and louvers in the top panel let it shed heat so it runs cooler than most solid-state integrateds at idle.

The front is a thick brushed-aluminum faceplate carrying two oversize knobs, a rotary source selector and a volume control on a motorized Alps potentiometer, with a turned wood oval bearing the Unison Research logo. The knurled volume action is one of the more satisfying tactile details at this price. The standard finish is silver, with black available as a special order.
Sound Performance
Because the only active gain stage is the ECC83 triode, the Unico Primo carries a trace of tube character without the obvious coloration that puts some listeners off valve amplifiers. Reviewers consistently describe it as warmish of neutral, with strong dynamics, a large soundstage, and bass that stays tuneful and weighty. The MOSFET output gives it the grip to stay composed as the volume climbs, which is where many affordable amplifiers start to harden up. It rewards a clean source and a capable pair of speakers, and it has the resolution to make the difference between recordings obvious.
Connectivity and Versatility

The rear panel carries five RCA inputs plus a tape loop, and on our units one of those inputs is fitted as the moving-magnet/moving-coil phono stage, switchable with internal jumpers. That leaves room for a CD player, streamer, tuner, and a turntable. Two pairs of speaker binding posts per channel support bi-wiring, and the dedicated subwoofer output lets you add a sub for a 2.1 or 2.2 setup. That subwoofer output is a genuinely useful feature: it extends the amplifier's reach into larger rooms and bass-heavy material without forcing an upgrade, which helps the Primo stay relevant in a system as it grows.
About Unison Research
Unison Research has built high-fidelity amplifiers and loudspeakers in Treviso, Italy since 1987, with designs by founder Giovanni Maria Sacchetti. The company is known for tube and hybrid amplifiers that marry traditional craftsmanship, hand-finished wood and turned metal, with circuits built and assembled in-house. The Unico Primo distills that approach into the most affordable amplifier in the range, and it has become one of the brand's best-selling models on the strength of it.
Explore the Unison Research Unico Line
The Unico Primo is the entry point to Unison Research's Unico hybrid integrated range. Step up to the Unico Nuovo for more power and a larger chassis, or the Unico Due for a further increase in output and refinement. At the top of the line, the Unico 150 delivers 150 watts per channel for demanding speakers and larger rooms.

"The Primo's strongest traits were its charged dynamics and spirited demeanor. The Primo flowed, and its somewhat dry, occasionally even cool character helped create very specific images with graphic leading edges." "The Primo played this mellow music with sweet, rhythmic attentiveness, capturing the flowing largesse, tonal depth, and execution of Baker on trumpet as well as I've ever heard it." "What the Primo lacks in extras it makes up in spirit and passion. It's alive!"
