REL T/7x or T/9x: which should I choose?
REL T/7x or T/9x: which should I choose?
The T/9x is the bigger engine. Both pair a front-firing active driver with a 10-inch down-firing passive radiator and a Class A/B amplifier, but the T/9x's active driver is 10 inches against the T/7x's 8, and its amplifier makes 300 watts against 200. REL rates the T/9x to 27Hz at -6dB and the T/7x to 30Hz. The T/9x cabinet is 370 x 340 x 393mm and 20.6kg; the T/7x is 356 x 320 x 363mm and 17.5kg.
What does the T/9x Special Edition change?
What does the T/9x Special Edition change?
The drive unit, the amplifier tuning and the finish. The T/9x SE uses a FibreCarbon cone with a carbon fiber center cap that is 10 grams lighter than the standard alloy cap, which REL says gives a faster response and 1.2dB more output, and the amplifier is retuned to suit it. It gets seven coats of lacquer instead of five and chromed billet aluminum feet. Size, amplifier power and the 27Hz rating are the same as the standard T/9x.
How do I connect the T/9x to my amplifier?
How do I connect the T/9x to my amplifier?
REL's first choice is the high-level connection, using the supplied Neutrik Speakon cable: red to the amplifier's right positive speaker terminal, yellow to the left positive, and black to a ground lug or chassis screw. The T/9x's 150,000-ohm input puts no meaningful load on your amplifier. With a Class D or fully balanced amplifier, REL warns never to connect the black wire to the speaker ground terminal; connect it to a ground lug or chassis screw instead, and let it float only if hum appears. The separate LFE input can run at the same time for home theater, with your front speakers set to Large.
Where should I place the T/9x, and how do I set it up?
Where should I place the T/9x, and how do I set it up?
REL starts in a corner behind the main speakers. Set the phase to whichever position sounds loudest and fullest, then slowly pull the sub out of the corner on the diagonal until the bass goes audibly deeper and louder, and stop there. Turn the level all the way down, set the crossover to 30Hz, and raise the level until you can just hear the sub with the main speakers playing. REL warns that the usual mistake is a crossover set too high and a level set too low. Allow about 24 hours of use to run in, and REL recommends leaving it switched on.
Can the T/9x be connected wirelessly?
Can the T/9x be connected wirelessly?
Yes, with REL's Arrow wireless system, which REL specifies for the T/x series. Arrow carries the high-level connection and the LFE signal at the same time, with the same input options as the sub's rear panel. In a stereo pair, REL is comfortable with one sub on Arrow and the other on a cable.
