The REL Planar PL-2 is a new category of subwoofer from REL Acoustics, designed to live on a wall rather than on the floor. A 5.7 inch deep cabinet delivers scale, projection, and room-filling energy without the visual weight of a traditional subwoofer enclosure. An 8 inch FlatPiston active driver works with a 10 inch FibreAlloy passive radiator, driven by 550 watts of Class D amplification and reaching down to 24 Hz in-room.

Wireless is built directly into the Planar cabinet, with a swappable receiver module designed to evolve as wireless protocols change. The PL-2 sits at the top of the new Planar line above the smaller PL-1, sized for medium to large rooms where placement flexibility matters as much as output.

The Planar PL-2 Was Built for the Wall

Most subwoofers force a choice between performance and where you can physically put them. Planar starts from the opposite direction. The PL-2 is 5.7 inches deep including mounting hardware, with the cabinet itself sitting closer to 4.5 inches off the wall. That depth lets it disappear into a room the way an on-wall speaker does, alongside in-wall and in-ceiling systems where a traditional floor sub never fit cleanly. Mounting against a boundary also reinforces low frequencies through the room's natural boundary gain, which is part of how the PL-2 reaches 24 Hz from a cabinet this slim.

8 Inch FlatPiston Driver With Long Throw Excursion

The active driver is an 8 inch (205 mm) FlatPiston long-throw unit on a steel chassis. The flat cone profile keeps moving mass low and stays linear across a wide excursion window, which is essential when a subwoofer this thin needs to move serious air. Paired with a 10 inch (250 mm) FibreAlloy passive radiator, the PL-2 extracts low-frequency output that the cabinet volume alone could not produce. 550 Watt Class D Amplifier

The amplifier is a 550 watt Class D module engineered specifically for the slim Planar cabinet. The amp drives the FlatPiston and passive radiator combination with the headroom needed for cinema dynamics and the control needed for music. Output stays composed at depth, with the dynamic reserve to handle peaks without compression.

Built-In Wireless, Designed to Evolve

Planar is the first REL subwoofer with wireless built directly into the cabinet. The receiver module sits in the side panel and is swappable, so future wireless generations can drop in without replacing the subwoofer. The PL-2 is compatible with REL's AirShip Direct wireless system, which removes the need to trail high-level or low-level cables across the room. The transmitter side is sold separately and pairs the source end of your system to the Planar's onboard receiver. For installations where cabling is impractical, this turns the PL-2 into a genuinely wireless subwoofer that still keeps REL's high-level connection philosophy intact.

Inputs for Two-Channel and Cinema

The PL-2 carries the same input set REL uses across the Serie S line. A high level Neutrik Speakon input connects to the speaker outputs of your main amplifier, carrying its full sonic signature for clean blending with the mains. A low level RCA input handles preamp-level connections, and a dedicated LFE RCA input ties into the subwoofer output of a home theater processor. The inputs can run in tandem for systems that handle both music and cinema, so a single PL-2 can serve a stereo setup and a multichannel system without rewiring.

Mount It, Roll It, or Place It

The PL-2 ships with wall-mount hardware and a back-wall spacer for the cleanest possible installation against a boundary. For rooms where wall mounting is not an option, the matching Planar Cart-2 gives the same subwoofer a wheeled floor stand in Piano Black or Gloss White. The cart is sized specifically for the PL-2 and converts a wall-design subwoofer into a mobile floor unit without compromising aesthetics. Both placement modes use the same connectivity and amplification, so there is no performance penalty for picking the configuration that fits the room.

Two Lacquer Finishes and Two Grille Looks

The PL-2 is available in Piano Black Lacquer or Gloss White Lacquer, both finished to the same standard as REL's reference subwoofers. A cloth grille is included and gives the cabinet a discreet, low-profile presence on the wall. For a more deliberate visual statement, the optional Premium Wood Grille drops in over the cloth, with white or black trim matched to the cabinet finish. The grilles are interchangeable on the same cabinet, so the look can change with the room without buying a different subwoofer.
