Description
The Cambridge Audio L/R X Advanced Active Stereo Streaming Speakers are the flagship of the L/R series and one of the most complete music systems you can buy at any price. 800 watts of power, dual 5-inch woofers, force-cancelling passive radiators, StreamMagic Gen 4, HDMI eARC, a built-in phono stage, and WiSA wireless connectivity between speakers. No cable between them, just plug each one into power and you're done.
Key Features of the L/R X Speakers
- 800 Watts Total Power: Two 400W amplifiers drive the system for effortless dynamics and room-filling sound.
- Flagship Driver Array: A custom 28mm tweeter, two 5-inch woofers (front and downward-firing), and two 6-inch passive radiators, all designed in-house by Cambridge Audio.
- Force-Cancelling Passive Radiators: Eliminates cabinet vibrations and allows flexible placement near walls without boominess.
- WiSA Wireless Link: High-quality wireless connection between primary and secondary speakers. No cable needed, just power.
- StreamMagic Gen 4: Industry-leading streaming module supports Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, and Google Cast.
- HDMI eARC Input: Transforms your TV audio with hi-fi quality sound and simple volume control via your TV remote.
- Integrated Phono Stage: Moving Magnet (MM) input allows for direct connection of a turntable.
- 64-Bit DSP + Speaker Protection: Run at maximum volume without distortion or risk of driver damage.
- Deep Bass Response: Delivers powerful low-end down to 35Hz, eliminating the need for a separate subwoofer.
- Six Finishes: Available in Black, White, Orange, Green, Blue, or Walnut (genuine walnut veneer).
Cambridge Audio L/R X: 57 Years of Engineering in One Speaker
Cambridge Audio has been designing and engineering audio equipment in Britain since 1968, starting with an integrated amplifier built around a toroidal power supply. That heritage is not just a marketing line for the L/R X. Every driver in these speakers is designed and engineered in-house by Cambridge Audio's team, led by Ollie Mayston, the engineer who previously tuned the Naim Muso 2 and Qb2 and was a significant contributor to the Focal Utopia headphones. The 28mm custom tweeter features a dual-radius aluminium dome with a purpose-built waveguide and a chambered rear enclosure that eliminates back-pressure on the diaphragm, reducing distortion and extending high-frequency detail. This is not a tweeter you'll find in anyone else's speaker.
Force-Cancelling Passive Radiators: Place Them Anywhere

The L/R X uses dual 6-inch passive radiators instead of a rear-firing port, and this design choice has real consequences for how you live with these speakers. Ported speakers have a well-known problem: place them close to a wall and the bass becomes boomy and indistinct. The L/R X doesn't have that problem. Passive radiators deliver extended bass (down to 35Hz) regardless of proximity to walls or corners. At CES 2026, Cambridge Audio demonstrated the L/R X in a large hotel suite with the speakers placed close to the wall for maximum bass extension, and even pushed right up against boundaries, they produced clean, articulate low end with no boominess or port noise. That's the passive radiator advantage.
The "force-cancelling" part matters just as much. The passive radiators are tuned to cancel out the mechanical vibrations from the active drivers, so the cabinet itself stays inert. In practical terms, this means you can put the L/R X on a shelf, a credenza, or a media console without the furniture buzzing and rattling when you turn the volume up. Cambridge Audio designed these for the real world, not just the ideal world of dedicated speaker stands in a treated room.
Dual Woofers with Split Crossover Design
The L/R X uses two 5-inch woofers in each speaker, but they're not simply doubling up. The front-facing woofer and the downward-firing woofer are crossed over at different frequency points, so each driver works in its optimal range. The front woofer handles upper bass and lower midrange where vocal weight and instrument body live, while the downward-firing woofer takes care of the deepest frequencies where kick drums and bass guitar fundamentals sit. Combined with the 6-inch passive radiators, the L/R X plays flat to 35Hz, which is deep enough to reproduce the fundamental of a bass guitar's lowest string. In most rooms, you won't need a subwoofer at all.
WiSA: No Cable Between Speakers
This is the feature that separates the L/R X from the L/R M and from most other powered speakers on the market. WiSA (Wireless Speaker and Audio) technology creates a high-quality wireless link between the primary and secondary speakers. Each speaker has its own power cord, and that's it. No cable running across the floor, behind the couch, or under a rug.
This matters most in real living rooms. If you want speakers flanking a fireplace, a mantle, or a wide entertainment center, running a cable from one speaker to the other is a genuine obstacle. With the L/R X, you plug each speaker into the nearest outlet and they find each other automatically. You can still use a USB-C cable to tether them if you prefer a wired connection, but the wireless option is there and it works without compromising audio quality.
64-Bit DSP and Advanced Speaker Protection
With 800 watts on tap, the L/R X has serious power reserves, and the 64-bit DSP pipeline makes sure all of that power is managed intelligently. The DSP handles crossover duties, dynamic equalization, and real-time driver monitoring. What this means in practice is that you can push the L/R X to its maximum volume output and it will not distort. It will not blow a tweeter. It will not clip. The protection circuitry is continuously monitoring every driver and intervening microseconds before anything reaches its limits. For a pair of speakers that might live in a family room, a media room, or anywhere that other people have access to the volume control, that's a meaningful assurance.
StreamMagic Gen 4: Every Source, One System

The L/R X runs Cambridge Audio's 4th generation StreamMagic platform, handling Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer, plus internet radio natively. It supports high-resolution playback up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD512, so it can handle anything you throw at it. AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and Roon Ready support mean it integrates into any multi-room setup you already have, or serves as the foundation for a new one.
The StreamMagic app itself is worth noting. It remembers volume settings for each input independently, so switching from TV to Spotify doesn't blast you or drop to nothing. You can hide inputs you don't use, keeping the interface clean for everyone in the household. And Cambridge Audio has been pushing meaningful over-the-air updates through StreamMagic for the past two years, adding features like VU meters and expanded format support after purchase. These speakers will get better over time, not just stay where they shipped.
Connectivity for Every Source in Your System

HDMI eARC connects to your TV and lets you control volume with your existing remote, making the L/R X a dramatic upgrade over any sound bar. The built-in moving magnet phono stage takes a turntable directly, no external preamp needed. USB-C handles computer audio, USB-A plays from media drives, and Optical TOSLINK covers legacy sources. Bluetooth is there for casual streaming. There's also a subwoofer output if you want to add one, though at 35Hz extension, most rooms won't need it.
Six Finishes, Including Real Walnut Veneer

The L/R X is available in six finishes: Black, White, Orange, Green, Blue, or Walnut. The walnut option is genuine walnut veneer, not a vinyl wrap, carrying a modest premium at $2,499/pair (vs. $2,399 for the other finishes). Industrial designer Martin Sherwood shaped the exterior with as much care as the engineering team put into the internals. Cambridge Audio partnered with London-based designer Maharishi on the green colorway, and the orange finish has a metallic quality that makes it the most visually striking option in the range. At CES, orange and green were the two most popular colors despite being forecasted as niche sellers, proof that when the finish quality is this good, people are willing to go bold.
