A subwoofer under $1,000 adds the low-frequency foundation that bookshelf speakers (and plenty of tower speakers) simply can't produce on their own. Good subs at this price aren't about shaking walls. They're about filling in the bottom octave so bass guitar has body, kick drums have weight, and orchestral music has the physical presence of a live performance. Room correction or adjustable crossovers on most models let you blend the sub seamlessly with your main speakers instead of hearing it as a separate, boomy addition. Done right, you don't hear the sub at all. You just hear more music.
