A dedicated CD player under $1,000 still makes sense if you've got a shelf of discs and want them to sound their best. Modern players at this price include quality DAC sections that handle 16-bit/44.1kHz with real care, solid transport mechanisms that read without skipping or jitter, and analog output stages designed for a clean handoff to your amplifier. Streaming is convenient, no argument there. But a well-mastered CD through a proper player often sounds better than the same album from a compressed stream. If you've built a disc collection over the years, it deserves better than a DVD player or a laptop.
