Description
The GMT® One System isn’t just a turntable, it’s an engineering benchmark that redefines what it means to play vinyl in the 21st century. Developed over years by the GMT Consortium and manufactured in its entirety in Sheffield, England, this system is the result of a collaborative alliance of engineers, physicists, designers, and craftspeople, all united by a singular goal: to push analog playback to its absolute peak. With more than thirty innovations, including patented and patent-pending technologies, the GMT® One System exists not as a variation on an existing theme but as a wholly new platform. It is, quite simply, unlike anything else in the world of high-end audio.
From its titanium tonearm to its closed-loop motor system, every part of the GMT® One System has been designed from the ground up with a ruthless devotion to detail. It’s a system that fuses mechanical precision, material science, and aesthetic restraint into a single expression of analog purity. Wilson Benesch has long been known for pushing boundaries, but the GMT® One isn’t an evolution. It’s a beginning.
Design and Development
The GMT® One System is the culmination of a long-term research and development program carried out by the GMT Consortium, a collective that includes academic institutions, advanced materials researchers, and manufacturing specialists. Thirty novel developments are embedded into this system, including international patents and registered design protections. What emerges is not just a single product, but an entirely new platform for analog playback.
From its motor system to the isolation architecture, nothing has been borrowed. Everything has been built. The intellectual property and manufacturing capability reside entirely within Wilson Benesch, ensuring absolute control over every element of the product. This level of vertical integration is almost unheard of in high-end audio today. As such, it’s inconceivable that any similar system using GMT technologies could emerge from outside this environment. The GMT® One System is the purest distillation of Wilson Benesch’s capabilities, and it exists as a category of one.
Made in Sheffield
Sheffield, England, is not just a location, it’s part of the product’s DNA. Known the world over for its industrial legacy, Sheffield has evolved into a center of advanced manufacturing and materials science. It is home to institutions such as The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, as well as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Park, facilities that serve as critical hubs for innovation across aerospace, automotive, and precision engineering.
Wilson Benesch has drawn on this deep well of regional expertise to bring the GMT® One System to life. Every part of the system is made in Sheffield. Every subassembly is either produced or directly controlled by Wilson Benesch’s own facility. This is not branding. It’s a statement of origin and a promise of quality that stretches back generations, and one that points forward to what’s next in high-fidelity analog performance.
Graviton® Tonearm System
At the center of the GMT® One System lies the Graviton® tonearm: a solid titanium armwand, precision machined from a single billet of titanium. This is not a composite or modular arm. It is a seamless structure that offers maximum rigidity, minimum resonance, and perfect mass distribution across the entire arm length. Titanium was selected not for aesthetics or prestige, but because its acoustic properties and strength-to-weight ratio provide a neutral and highly controlled platform for cartridge tracking.
The Graviton® is an engineered interface between the cartridge and the groove. It delivers unmatched structural integrity and ultra-low noise transfer. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house, the arm integrates into the broader geometry and suspension system of the GMT® One, forming a complete analog chain of precision. The tonearm base includes mechanisms for azimuth adjustment, VTA calibration, and bias control, allowing every setup parameter to be dialed in with reference-grade accuracy.
OMEGA and ALPHA Motor Drive Architecture
Time is everything in analog. Without absolute control over rotational speed and torque, all other precision becomes meaningless. The GMT® One System addresses this challenge through its proprietary OMEGA and ALPHA motor systems. Together, they form a zero-backlash, closed-loop drive mechanism that delivers microsecond-resolved accuracy. Every rotation is monitored and stabilized in real-time, eliminating deviations and ensuring that pitch and timing remain flawless under all playback conditions.
This is not just motor control. It’s timebase mastery. By integrating custom-engineered electronics with motors that were developed specifically for the GMT® system, Wilson Benesch has created a motor platform that functions more like a scientific instrument than a traditional turntable. Speed changeovers, torque load, and platter inertia are all continuously measured and adjusted. The result is not just audible — it’s transformational.
TESSELLATE Ti Reference Cartridge
Paired with the Graviton® arm is the TESSELLATE Ti, Wilson Benesch’s reference moving coil cartridge, developed as an integral part of the GMT® One System. Its structure is built on a titanium chassis, matched with a carbon nanotube cantilever for extreme stiffness and speed. This pairing delivers a level of resolution and clarity that is simply beyond reach for most conventional designs.
Unlike many high-end cartridges which are voiced independently, the TESSELLATE Ti was designed as part of the GMT® One System architecture. Its compliance, mass, and electrical characteristics are precisely matched to the arm and interface geometry. This system-level approach ensures not just performance, but coherence: a seamless flow of energy from groove to signal path.
STAGE One Mechanical Interface
Cartridge alignment and tonearm geometry are only as good as the platform that supports them. The STAGE One system is Wilson Benesch’s answer to this problem: a fully modular, ultra-stable tonearm platform that allows precise control over all key setup variables. Height, azimuth, and bias are all micro-adjustable, with piezo-driven mechanisms integrated into the structure for real-time, app-based control of VTA.
The STAGE One system also includes built-in calibration references, making setup both more accurate and more repeatable. Whether you’re fine-tuning a new cartridge or referencing your favorite pressing, STAGE One ensures that the physical mechanics of playback are always under your control and never left to guesswork.
LeVeL Isolation System
Beneath the GMT® One System lies the LeVeL Isolation System: a trio of precision-machined titanium-polymer feet designed to isolate the entire system from mechanical vibration. Rather than relying on traditional sorbothane or elastomer damping, LeVeL uses a multi-material approach that strategically dissipates energy across frequency bands.
Each isolation foot is machined in-house, layered with a proprietary matrix that interrupts resonance paths while preserving rigidity. This allows the GMT® One System to remain inert and stable, even in rooms with high ambient energy. It’s not about over-damping. It’s about tuning, and Wilson Benesch has tuned the LeVeL system with the same care they apply to every other part of the platform.
Integrated Piezo VTA Control
Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) can dramatically alter the tonal balance and tracking behavior of a cartridge, yet in most systems, it remains static. Wilson Benesch has changed this with the integration of a piezo-actuated VTA control system that can be operated from the control panel or wirelessly via the companion app.
This mechanism provides micron-level resolution, allowing for precise compensation across pressings of varying thickness or groove modulation. The adjustment system is fast, silent, and completely stable under load, meaning you can tune your system without disrupting playback. It’s a level of control previously reserved for laboratory-grade tonearm setups, now seamlessly integrated into the world’s most advanced turntable system.
Wilson Benesch GMT® Control App
The GMT® Control App extends the system’s intelligence to your fingertips. From speed selection and motor diagnostics to VTA positioning and cartridge hour tracking, the app offers full control over the system in real-time. Designed with both transparency and usability in mind, it allows users to see and manage performance parameters with the same precision as the internal electronics.
This is not an accessory. It’s a core part of the GMT® One experience: a modern control interface built with the same engineering rigor as the physical system itself.
