Description

The Wilson Benesch IGx is not a subwoofer in the conventional sense. It is an infrasonic generator built to reproduce the lowest octaves of music with speed, control, and physical presence. Inspired by timpani, kettle drums, and kick drums, the IGx was engineered to deliver not just low frequencies, but physical impact. Every element, from its 18-inch carbon fiber diaphragm to its push-pull dual-motor core, was designed to move air without delay, distortion, or resonance. Unlike traditional subwoofers, the IGx doesn’t rely on brute amplifier power to overcome mechanical resistance. It’s a complete reimagining of low-frequency reproduction built on physics, not convention.

The original Torus Infrasonic Generator introduced the concept in 2006. The IGx takes everything further: a woven carbon fiber–PET diaphragm supported by a precision steel core; a basketless push-pull motor system that removes latency and distortion; and a structurally inert circular enclosure cross-braced with steel. Combined with efficient Class D amplification and intuitive DSP control developed with CAAS Audio, the IGx achieves perfect integration and exceptional timing within high-end systems.

Key Features
  • 18-Inch Carbon Fibre–PET Diaphragm: Lightweight, rigid, and critically damped to deliver unmatched transient speed and extension

  • Push-Pull Dual-Motor Drive System: Two 82mm coils with high-power Neodymium magnets mounted above and below the diaphragm for electromagnetic control

  • 16kg Steel Core: Anchors the entire drive system and absorbs resonance and thermal energy

  • Circular Enclosure Design: Acoustically inert drum shape eliminates cabinet resonance and subwoofer “droning”

  • Vertical and Horizontal Cross-Bracing: Adds damping and rigidity throughout the entire structure

  • 500W Class D Amplifier: High-efficiency internal amp provides fast, clean power with low thermal footprint

  • Fully Adjustable Control Panel: Phase, crossover, and gain settings co-developed with CAAS Audio for optimal system integration

  • Handcrafted in Sheffield, England: Designed and manufactured entirely in-house for unmatched precision

  • White-Glove Delivery and Setup: Personally delivered and installed by Michael Hoatson anywhere in the U.S. for seamless system performance

Carbon Fibre–PET Diaphragm

At the core of the IGx is a woven carbon fiber–PET diaphragm engineered specifically by Wilson Benesch for ultra-fast, highly damped infrasonic reproduction. Developed in partnership with leading European composite specialists, this material combines the rigidity of carbon fiber with the damping characteristics of PET. The result is a sub-100g diaphragm that supports 1000 times its own mass. This stiffness-to-mass ratio is the highest in the industry, allowing the diaphragm to move with pistonic precision while maintaining composure under load.

Because the diaphragm is formed from a single continuous weave, it avoids the discontinuities and energy dispersion issues common in pre-preg or patched diaphragms. It delivers air movement with lightning speed, zero smear, and perfect timing, ideal for reproducing complex low-frequency cues in orchestral and cinematic recordings.

Push-Pull Electromagnetic Drive System

Unlike conventional woofers, the IGx doesn’t use a traditional basket-mounted voice coil. Instead, it employs two 82mm voice coils and two Neodymium magnets operating in a push-pull configuration. One coil and magnet sit above the diaphragm and form the visible chrome dome; the second coil and magnet sit below. Both act in unison, governing the diaphragm’s position with absolute control and eliminating the need for stiff spiders or heavy surrounds.

This reduces resistance and increases efficiency. There is no wasted amplifier power overcoming suspension stiffness. The result is faster, cleaner response to transients, better integration with main loudspeakers, and true infrasonic detail, not bloated bass.

The Steel Core

The 16kg machined steel core is the structural and mechanical anchor of the IGx. It supports the motor assembly, conducts thermal energy from the coils, and absorbs structural vibration. All driver energy is channeled into the core rather than the cabinet, bypassing traditional enclosure resonance entirely.

Additional performance benefits include:

  • Eliminates the need for high-stiffness spiders or heavy suspensions

  • Maximizes amplifier efficiency

  • Reduces internal air turbulence

  • Aligns all moving parts on the vertical axis

  • Functions as a high-mass heat sink, improving thermal management and long-term reliability

Circular Cabinet with Cross-Bracing

The IGx enclosure takes inspiration from the acoustic instruments it emulates. The circular geometry provides natural rigidity and eliminates panel flex. To further damp internal resonance, Wilson Benesch includes:

  • A 10mm steel ring bracing the horizontal axis

  • 12mm tensioned steel bars running the vertical length of the enclosure. These elements work together to prevent the cabinet from adding its own signature to the sound, avoiding the “droning” effect common to conventional subwoofers. What remains is the pure tone and dynamic shape of the original recording.

Efficient Internal Amplification

The IGx is powered by a 500W Class D amplifier housed within its base. Wilson Benesch chose this topology for its compact form factor, high efficiency, low heat output, and reliability. Unlike power-hungry traditional subs that require thousands of watts to move stiff, heavy diaphragms, the IGx leverages its design efficiency to achieve more with less.

Power handling:

  • 100W continuous

  • 500W max into 4 ohms

  • 10–15W idle power draw

Advanced Control System

Developed in partnership with CAAS Audio, the IGx control system allows seamless tuning and system matching via rear panel settings:

  • Phase adjustment: 0° to 180°

  • Filter frequency: 30Hz to 90Hz

  • Gain: -30dB to +45dB. The control board reflects Wilson Benesch’s GMT research and offers flexible integration into both stereo and multi-channel systems.
