A slim floorstander with bass response that genuinely surprises. The Vienna Acoustics Beethoven Baby Grand Reference is a three-way tower speaker built around three 6-inch Composite Cone drivers (one midrange, two woofers), all sharing the same flat X4P diaphragm architecture, paired with Vienna's hand-coated silk dome tweeter. It reaches down to 28 Hz in a cabinet barely seven inches wide, delivering the kind of tonal coherence and low-end authority that larger speakers in this price range struggle to match.

Key Features of the Beethoven Baby Grand Reference

  • Three-Way, Four-Driver Configuration: 1.1" hand-coated silk dome tweeter, 6" X4P Composite Cone midrange, and two 6" X4P Composite Cone woofers covering 28 Hz to 23 kHz
  • Composite Cone Driver Technology: Flat X4P diaphragms across midrange and bass, with inverted woven fabric center domes and 14-18mm structural bracings for precise, piston-like movement
  • Precision Crossover Network: Polypropylene capacitors (1% tolerance), air-core coils for midrange/tweeter, special powder-core inductors for bass, and inductance-free metal film resistors (1% tolerance)
  • Sealed Midrange Enclosure: The 6" midrange driver operates in its own isolated chamber, preventing woofer energy from coloring vocal and instrumental reproduction
  • Handcrafted Austrian Cabinets: Real-wood veneer in Cherry or Premium Rosewood, or hand-applied piano lacquer in Black or White, all with heavily braced internal construction
  • Bass Reflex Loading: Rear-ported QB3 (Quasi-Butterworth) alignment optimized for impulse response control
  • 89 dB Sensitivity at 4 Ohms: Pairs well with quality amplification from 40 to 300 watts

Composite Cone: The Baby Grand Reference's Secret Weapon

The technology that makes this speaker punch above its size class is Vienna Acoustics' Composite Cone construction, shared with the larger Concert Grand Reference. Each driver uses a flat outer disc molded from X4P (a proprietary TPX/polypropylene compound) reinforced with structural bracings, 18mm tall in the woofers and 14mm in the midrange. At the center sits an inverted dome of woven fabric, double-coated on the rear side and recessed 8mm into the cone for optimal off-axis behavior. Because every square centimeter of the flat diaphragm delivers the same impulse as its neighbors, the drivers move as a true piston rather than flexing. And because the midrange and bass drivers share identical materials and construction, the frequency handoff between them is unusually coherent.

The Tweeter: Scandinavian Silk, Viennese Voicing

Vienna Acoustics designed their own 1.1" silk dome tweeter and has it hand-coated by a team of Scandinavian specialists. The same unit found in the Concert Grand Reference, it extends well into the midrange region, revealing fine detail with what the manufacturer describes as "natural ease." The material affinity between the woven fabric tweeter dome and the woven fabric center cones in the Composite Cone drivers creates a tonal consistency across the entire frequency range that mixed-material driver arrays rarely achieve.

Crossover Design: Simple Slopes, Sophisticated Execution

Peter Gansterer, Vienna Acoustics' founder and designer, voices every crossover through extended listening sessions rather than relying solely on measurement. The Baby Grand Reference uses gentle first-order (6 dB/octave) slopes transitioning to Bessel second-order (12 dB/octave) filters, a topology chosen to preserve phase coherence and transient accuracy. The component quality is serious: polypropylene capacitors and coils held to 1% and 0.7% tolerance respectively, air-core inductors in the midrange/tweeter section to avoid magnetic saturation, and special powder-core inductors in the bass section for higher current handling. Every metal film resistor is inductance-free at 1% tolerance.

Baby Grand vs. Concert Grand: Choosing the Right Beethoven

Both speakers share the same Composite Cone technology, the same hand-coated silk dome tweeter, and the same crossover philosophy. The differences come down to room size and bass ambition. The Concert Grand Reference adds a third 7-inch woofer (and uses 7-inch drivers throughout the bass section), giving it more cone area, deeper bass weight, and greater dynamic headroom for larger rooms. The Baby Grand Reference, with its narrower 7.2-inch baffle and 40-inch height, is the better choice for rooms under roughly 350 square feet, where the Concert Grand's additional output could overwhelm the space. Both reach 28 Hz, but the Concert Grand does it with more effortless authority at higher volumes.
