It cannot touch the main speakers, so the mains keep running full range and overlap the subs through the whole bass region. The DSPx sits ahead of the amplifiers and works on both sides of the handoff at once: it high-passes the mains, low-passes each subwoofer, and, most importantly, sets when each half of the signal arrives. Walt Zerbe, Perlisten's Director of Global Business, describes "a product made for the stereo world," built "so you can properly integrate subwoofers with main speakers."

Why You Delay the Mains, Not the Subs

Bass from a subwoofer reaches your seat later than the same note from the main speakers. Group delay climbs as frequency drops, the subwoofer's own processing adds latency, and the subs are usually behind the mains or in a corner. You cannot make the subwoofer earlier, so the only fix is to hold the mains back until the two line up. That is what the DSPx does: it delays the mains, not the woofers, until both arrive at the seat at the same time. In Perlisten's own demonstrations, that single change does more for how drums and bass feel than any phase or level adjustment.

Delay Is Not Phase

Most subwoofers offer a phase control and call it delay. It is not. A phase shift is different at every frequency and changes again when you move the crossover point, so it can make the response sum nicely on a graph while the sub still arrives late. The DSPx applies pure time delay, the same at every frequency, on the mains and on each subwoofer output, which very few subwoofers offer. In one Perlisten show demonstration the subs measured 20 milliseconds behind the mains; delaying the mains by 23 milliseconds put all four subs and the mains at the seat together.

Connections, Filters and Setup Tools

The back panel takes AES3 digital (S/PDIF works on the same input), balanced analog and unbalanced analog, and the outputs can be analog or digital regardless of which input you chose. From the front-panel touchscreen you pick the input, choose a filter family (Butterworth, Bessel or Linkwitz-Riley) and slope for the mains and for each of the four subwoofer outputs, and set frequency, gain, delay, phase and polarity per channel. Parametric EQ is available on the mains and on each subwoofer output, with individual gain per sub. Input and output gain are adjustable so a 2 V preamp and a 14 V preamp both land at the right level. There is a noise generator and a tone generator for measuring, a bypass so you can hear the system with and without the filtering, and peak hold. A full app is planned; the touchscreen runs everything today.

Room Correction, Applied Before the Amplifiers

Time alignment is the headline, but the DSPx also carries room correction. Every room adds peaks and dips in the bass that no speaker can design its way around, and a correction stage that sees the whole system can address them where they start. Perlisten has not yet published how the correction is measured or applied beyond the parametric EQ on the mains and subwoofer outputs, so we are not going to guess. That is the use case it was built for: several subwoofers, one set of mains, and every driver arriving on the same beat. Perlisten has been taking the prototype to shows to find out what works and what needs improving before it ships.

Where the DSPx Fits in the Perlisten Line

The DSPx is the piece that ties Perlisten subwoofers to whatever sits above them.
